Lookout, mama! It’s another edition of Track Marks, in which your Idolators examine the who-what-whens-why of the latest Internet MP3 sensation. Today’s entry:

Artist: Benjy Ferree Hometown: Washington, D.C. Album: Leaving The Nest, due Nov. 7th First online mention (according to searches on The Hype Machine and Elbo.ws): A March 2 post on S K A T T E R B R A I N The Build-Up: After a months-long absence from the blogosphere, Ferree got a mention on Yeti Don’t Dance in August, followed by a nod on My Old Kentucky Blog. The Dam-Break: Look for it to start any second now: Domino Records just started sending out MP3s of the tracks to bloggers yesterday, resulting in thumbs-up posts from I Rock Cleveland, Puddlegum, and, again, Yeti Don’t Dance. Odds of Backlash: 10 to 1. It’s hard to diss someone whose name you can’t even pronounce. Are They Worthy?: To be honest, Leaving The Nest sat at the bottom of our “Need to listen to” pile for a good month–mostly because we took one look at Ferree’s press photo and assumed he was another WGWP (White Guy WIth Problems). And while Nest has its share of should-be mopy moments, Ferree has a way of making even the most jaunty moments sound dark. That said, there is whistling. Consider yourself warned.
