Stereogum’s Listening Session Reveals A Slightly Tin Ear

Stereogum reposted the new Timbaland/Nelly Furtado/Justin Timberlake joint earlier this afternoon, and the accompanying pan contained this groaner:

Not surprisingly, the beat is awesome once it kicks in, but then we’re smacked with Nelly’s vox and umm … why does hip-hop hate melody so much?!

Now, we aren’t fans of Furtado’s mewlings ourselves, but still … why does hip-hop hate melody? That criticism seems a bit rockist to us–especially from a site that champions such tonally challenged acts as … And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and the Verve Pipe. Thankfully, some of Stereogum’s regular commenters wasted no time calling out the post, but still … yeesh. We hope that the site’s big payday hasn’t resulted in its stable of writers getting all indie-snobby on us; after all, where else are we going to find out about Lindsay Lohan’s next album?
