Track Marks: How Matt & Kim Became This Week’s Biggest Band In The World

Nov 16th, 2006 // 2 Comments

Welcome to another edition of Track Marks, in which your Idolators perform an autopsy on the latest MP3-blog sensation.

Artist: Matt & Kim
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Album: Matt & Kim (IHEARTCOMIX)
First blog mention: A May 2005 post on SUCKA PANTS.
The Build-Up: In the past year and a half, this keyed-up pop duo received sporadic mentions on sites like Popsheep, You Ain’t No Picasso, and Both Sides Of The Mouth.
The Dam-Break: A steady stream of mentions in October and November helped the band land on’ “Hot Artists” top 10 list.
Odds of Backlash: 6-1. Those mariachi hats may look like press-photo hijinks, but they’re actually a shield from criticism: Nobody makes fun of mariachi hats.
Are They Worthy?: Yes they are! Though they may be! Too upbeat! For! Some! Of! You!

I think a band should be disqualified from being Idolator’s Biggest Band of the Week if they were already Gothamist’s Band of the Week over two months ago.

Plus, I’m pretty sure they haven’t played outside of Bushwick. I guess they qualify for This Week’s Biggest Band at Office Ops.
