Live-Blogging The American Music Awards: We Really Hope Slash Shows Up Tonight

Even when they don’t have a drunken Slash causing seven-second-delay panic, the American Music Awards are a joke. Their nominees were announced by Carmen Electra, their categories are labeled “Favorite” instead of “Best,” they consider Nickelback “Alternative”–shoot, they don’t even have a decent Web site. Lacking both the pomposity of the Grammys and the WTF-osity of the MTV Video Music Awards, the AMAs instead possess a singular blend of bland self-importance and all-American cheesiness–one that, naturally, makes for a perfect opportunity for us to engage in our first live-blogging experience. We’ll begin our live-blog at 8 p.m. ET, just in time for Gwen Stefani, probably dressed up in a nun outfit with a cross that says “L.A.M.B.” across the top, to hit the stage yodeling.
