Year-End Analysis: What Does Joanna Newsom Have To Do To Get Some Attention From Music Bloggers?

jojo.jpg…And the best-of-the-year lists keep on rolling in. Some notable music-blog entries:

- The Marathonpacks list is a frustrating read: Not because it’s bad–actually, this is one of the better round-ups we’ve read this week–but because it reminded your Idolators that the M’s excellent Future Women came out this year, and that we completely forgot about it when putting together our own lists. [Marathonpacks]
- Gorilla vs. Bear includes the Knife, J Dilla, and Grizzly Bear. But aren’t they sort of biased towards that last one? [Gorilla vs. Bear]
- On Chromewaves, all the Top 10 entries get their own sports cards–but since it’s a Canadian site, the cards are from O-Pee-Chee, not Topps. [Chromewaves]

  1. Bob Loblaw

I’ll check my Beckett’s, but I’m pretty sure that O-Pee-Chee reference is worth $4.50^. I’ll give you my near-mint ’88 Score Bo Jackson “Black and Blue” for it.

  2. Catbirdseat

Yeah, $4.50 CAN; what a gyp. Break out your loonies and your toonies.

Also, the short list for all the folks who don’t want to click thru a billion sites: Here are the discs that those lists seem to unanimously agree you should like:

    Joanna Newsom – Ys
    Destroyer – Destroyer’s Rubies
TVOTR – Cookie Monster’s Escape To Witch Mountain
    The Knife – Silent Shout
The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls In America

plus the rap stylings of Ghostface and Clipse

(RELATED: I had no idea so many people were so into Centro-Matic’s 9,678,453rd record that came out this year– that one made a surprising number of lists)

I might have to make some sort of list after taking last year off, just so I can leave the Hold Steady off. I loved the first two records, but something about this new one just doesn’t do it for me.

I think Destroyer’s Rubies would probably be my favorite record of the year.

  5. eric harvey

hey ryan catbird–where exactly did you find TVOTR or the Hold Steady on my list?

  6. Catbirdseat

Sure, Professor Packy, take me to task for misusing “unanimously.”

    OK, here’s my edited version:

Also, the short list for all the folks who don’t want to click thru a billion sites: Here are the discs that those lists seem to ***ALMOST*** unanimously agree you should like:

…and by the way, by “those lists,” I don’t mean “Just those 3 lists mentioned in the post”, I mean, from the music blogosphere as a whole. I’ve been roughly tallying those aggregate picks in my head, although I’m sure someone’s ready to bust out an exhaustive, fully tabulated, itemized spreadsheet at any moment now.

ah, the semantic dangers of hasty comment board generalizations
