Compiling a year-end Top 10 list means making plenty of painful nips, tucks, and tweaks. And so, as we prepare our Jackin’ Pop singles lists, we present “Stuck At Eleven,” a daily look at the songs that came thisclose to making the final cut.

We’re still trying to figure out why Chicago combo the M’s didn’t bust out bigger this year: After releasing the ultra-tuneful Future Women in February, they got a slot on Lollapalooza, a spin on The O.C., and a mash note from Jonathan Demme, who signed on to direct the video for Women‘s natty title track. The clip never happened, which is a shame, since it could have helped this stomping tale of devotion–one that seemed to come straight from the Village Green Preservation Society–find the audience it so deserves.
