mutantes.jpgThe well-deserved year-end praise for Soul Jazz’s recent Tropicalia compilation has encouraged us to pull out some of our old Os Mutantes records. It’s hard to pick just a handful of tracks from this legendary outfit, but we’ll focus on the 1970 gem Technicolor; the album was out of print for decades, meaning that legions of listeners were deprived of hearing its jubilant title track:

Os Mutantes – Technicolor [MP3, link expired]
Os Mutantes – She’s My ShooShoo (A Minha Menina) [MP3, link expired]

title track is great indeed, but the re-recorded tracks lose something in the translation from portuguese to english. “a minha menina” >>> “she’s my shoo-shoo.”

the english version of “panis et circenses” on this album is just spine-tingling.

They played Webster Hall over the summer. Incredible show.

Did anyone else see that Tropicalia exhibit at the Bronx museum. It was cool, but I don’t know if I had the attention span for all the films there.

To chime in on Noamjamski’s comment above, they played the Hollywood Bowl this summer and they were the best opening act of the year, hands down.
