Videodrone: James Brown Brings Down The House One More Time

The above clip contains a slice of James Brown’s performance on The T.A.M.I. Show, a Dick Clark-produced all-star concert that had a brief theatrical run in the mid-’60s. It’s not officially available on DVD, but there are copies floating around on the gray market; it’s worth seeking out for Brown’s full performance, which was spellbinding enough, according to reports, to freak out Mick Jagger, who had the unenviable task of going on next. Also recommended: the YouTube-accessible clips from Brown’s 1968 show at the Boston Garden, which took place the day after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated; we watched the DVD (another gray-market special) yesterday, and the performance was so electric, just watching him introduce his band made us exhausted.
