Sources tell Billboard.com a contract could be signed as soon as today for Live Nation to produce a 40-date amphitheatre tour by Van Halen this summer, with original frontman David Lee Roth back in the fold for the first time in more than 20 years.

As previously reported, guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s 15-year-old son Wolfgang has stepped in for original bassist Michael Anthony in the new incarnation of the group, which also features drummer Alex Van Halen.

No word on whether Waldo will be in attendance at any of the shows (If they happen, that is.)

UPDATE: Rolling Stone also has a piece on the tour, noting that everything got underway in December, when Roth went to Eddie Van Halen’s Hollywood home studio and “rejoined the band for a rehearsal, singing fourteen Van Halen classics.” Oh, to have been a fly on the wall for that session! Assuming Eddie’s studio has a wall, and it’s not made out of aluminum foil and gum.

Is this 80′s Van Halen or the Bluegrass version?

Either way – dude is washed up.

I predict a broken hip on DLR when he tries to break out the old 1984 era kung fu moves…

This has disaster written all over it…40 dates scheduled…whats the over under on how far they make it? I am saying 8 shows before the wheels come off the wagon…

There should definitely be some sort of pool started as to when this blows up and how. You have to pick how many tour dates (0 is acceptable, if not inevitable) and a reason (Dave has voice problems, Alex’s back goes out, Eddie gets “exhaustion”, Wolfgang’s voice changes and he can no longer sing Michael Anthony’s backup vocals, etc.)

Remember when this bunch (with Michael Anthony) was on the MTV Awards back in the ’90s and DLR was acting like he was on 36 hits of ecstacy and Eddie couldn’t get far enough away from him on the stage? That’s kinda what I think the first, and last, show of the tour will be like.

Put me down for one show. Reason: Eddies hip replacement is messing with the wireless on his guitar.

    sit down, Waldo!
