“I’m From Rolling Stone” Episode Guide, Part Four
We don’t know how much longer MTV will keep I’m From Rolling Stone on the air–one of the episodes this weekend was pre-empted by a True Life special on sumo wrestling– but until they throw in the towel, Idolator intern Kate Richardson will keep watching it for us. Her take on last night’s episode after the click-through.
Highlights from Episode 104, “There’s Something Rotten in Denmark” (a.k.a. “There’s Something Rotten in A Country That Will Never, Ever Air This Show”):
-Joe Levy informs the supposedly music-savvy writers that they will work as a team to cover the 35-year-old Roskilde Festival in Denmark; he’s met with a deluge of confusion, plus the obligatory Bob Dylan enthusiasm from Krystal. – He’s also met with Colin’s unstoppable enthusiasm: “I really just think the only word to describe it is…awesome.” – The festival is portrayed with the most blandly edited, barely audible concert footage since the 1997 John Tesh Avalon concert VHS. -Krishtine calls dibbs on a story about rapper Tech N9ne , because she knows him personally, and the point of journalism is to write the stories that require little to no research or reporting. Obviously. – Peter confesses that he has no idea who George Clinton is, but that doesn’t stop him from getting up onstage with Parliamnt and doing the traditional “underqualified Aussie” dance. – In an attempt to force Krishtine to cover something outside of her comfort zone, Russell weasels his way into writing the Tech N9ne story. He later defends his decision by telling Krishtine something that any Stone reader has known for years: “It’s going to be hard to work at Rolling Stone just doing rap music.” -Joe Levy and Alex Mar powwow about the poor quality of the writers’ Roskilde pieces, and begin to wonder whether these people were maybe picked for reasons other than talent. – The show ends with this sad little post-script: “All of the writers’ Roskilde coverage required major rewriting by all the editors.” Except for Krishtine’s coverage, of course, as she did not manage to write a story.
Episode grade, on a Rolling Stone-like scale of three stars to three-and-a-half stars: Two-and-a-half stars Most annoying intern of the episode: Despite a few scattered moments of rationality this episode, Krishtine still comes out on top, thanks to her sheer force of her screen-time and apparent refusal to cover music she doesn’t care about. Least annoying intern of the episode: Russell, who seems the most like a legitimate journalist. Episode grade, on a Rolling Stone-like scale of three stars to three-and-a-half stars: Three stars Jann’s beard growth, on a scale of 1 to 10: Once again, he’s nowhere to be found. What up, Jann? Did you spend the entire show flounder-fishing in the Gulf Of Mexico with Larry Mullen Jr.?
