The Vault: Taana Gardner Opens Her Heart

The Newark-born singer Taana Gardner hooked up with New York City disco label West End Records in the late 1970s and released the sublime “Heartbeat,” which has both handclaps and heartbeats in its percussive arsenal, in 1980; it fired up the record shops, selling 100,000 copies in a single week. This nine-minute version of the track was mixed by the late Larry Levan, and its slinky bassline was sampled far and wide, including a turn in Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes The Hotstepper”:
