Today’s Variety has an article on yesterday’s bloodletting at MTV Networks, where large chunks of the VH1 Classic and MTV2 staffs got pink-slipped. Perhaps in response to nostalgia-drunk bloggers’ ravings, an MTV spokesperson quoted in the article stressed that “the consumer will not notice any difference in terms of programming” on the two networks. However, Variety notes that the powers that be at MTV Networks think that the content on both networks–like kitschy clips and Pimp My Ride reruns–can be “effectively and lucratively distributed on digital platforms,” which, to us, can only mean one outcome: Music videos will be banished to MTV’s network of impossible-to-navigate Web sites, VH1 Classic limps to its inevitable end while airing marathons of “vintage” Best Week Ever episodes, and MTV2 turns into the all-Celebrity Deathmatch, all the time network.
