Hugh Grant Fools Movie-Going Public Into Believing He Is A Pop Star

Music & Lyrics, the Hugh Grant-Drew Barrymore romantic comedy that has Grant playing a more hetero George Michael type on the comeback trail, got crushed at the box office in its opening weekend, but the accompanying album–which snuck into stores last week and features Grant taking lead vocals on seven of its Adam Schlesinger-penned tracks–is currently in the pole position at the iTunes Store and No. 11 on Amazon.com. Of course, these online sales are only a small part of the picture (and the album’s iTunes standing is no doubt helped by the fact that Grant’s songs can’t be purchased as single tracks) but if this soundtrack lands in the top 10 on tomorrow’s Billboard 200, watch for a bidding war to erupt over Grant–although every contract he’s offered will have a clause forcing him to sing only “cheesy” songs, since that word popped up in about half of the glowing reviews we saw from his most diehard fans. (We’d force the John Taylor-like hairdo on him, too, but only because we had to sit through Nine Months one too many times.)
