Leak Of The Day: Nine Inch Nails, For The 900th Time

Feb 20th, 2007 // 9 Comments

therez.jpgThanks to Deaf Indie Elephants for the heads-up that yet another track from Nine Inch Nails’ upcoming Year Zero has leaked. Considering that “Me, I’m Not.” is the third Zero song to surface in less than a week, we’re either a very complicit cog in the most blatant viral-marketing schemes of all time, or Trent Reznor is spending all of his sleeping on bathroom floors in Spain.

Nine Inch Nails – Me, I’m Not [MP3, link removed]

Best one of the bunch yet. Would be too long as a single without an edit but it’s way more immediate than “Survivalism,” which I’m still surprised will be the official single.

I found this to be the weakest of a sadly pretty meh bunch. Not terrible, but not original at all. But what am I doing expecting NIN to sound like anything other than themselves. At the same time, their DFA aping on “Only” was one of the best musical moments of 2005. Sadly, the fun and humor of that track is lacking from these new ones.

After all the reports about what this whole concept album is supposed to be about, if there’s any fun and humor anywhere on the album I’ll be pretty damn surprised!

considering the defining characteristic of Trent Reznor’s 20-ish year career to this point is a complete and utter lack of a sense of humor about himself, the world, or anything in it, I think you might be right.

“it’s way more immediate than “Survivalism,” which I’m still surprised will be the official single.”

Reznor rarely releases the /real/ singles first. When “The Day The World Went Away” was released, “Starfu*@#rs Inc.” was the b-side, which went on to become a much bigger radio presence.

@drjimmy11: What about Perfect Drug and Underneath it All? Or their cover of Soft Cell’s Memorabilia? Those are three obvious examples. I always thought there was a certain lightness in the rhythms and song construction, even when it’s nowhere to be found in the lyrics. Many NIN songs are completely danceable.

yay! I’m a music pirate. Eat me RIAA.

isn’t it somewhat anti-climactic to leak so many songs so far in advance…? that’s what they’re proposing on culturecloud. i guess there’s something exciting about being the first to know, but it’s sad when an album is already old hat on its release date. take G’n'R for example.

Curious question, the three mentioned “leaked” songs are not quite so “leaked” as they are all presented by NIN on their myspace page. These are not leaks at all, just internet promotions directly from the band.

Fan club members can hear the album, again another promotional release by NIN… and not a true leak.
