ARTIST: Suede
SONG: “My Insatiable One”
FIRST APPEARANCE: “The Drowners” 12″/CD, 1992
WHY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN A-SIDE: In 1992, magazines on the other side of the pond touted Suede as one of the best bands in the UK on the strength of just a few singles. “My Insatiable One,” which only appeared on two of the three versions of Suede’s first single (does that make it a C-side?), is a big reason why; it’s a stretched-out, mournful track that’s full of hazy longing and painkiller-blurred guitar. Heck, “Insatiable” even got covered by Morrissey a few weeks after its release, which should serve as a stronger argument for its greatness than anything else we could put here.

ricky gervias managed this band at some point, correct?

This is high school in a nutshell for me. Always loved those andro bands, I guess…

  3. Wicked Zoot

A one album band to be sure, but that one album was a doozy.

@Furman P. Slothra: ricky gervias managed this band at some point, correct?

Yes indeed, in the very early days. It’s talked about in David Barnett’s v. cool story of the band, Love and Poison.

Fairly obsessive fan here, even in the end days — running the biggest mailing list on them had something to do with that! I’m actually going to be in London to see some of the debut Brett A. solo shows; I’m keeping my expectations low to be safe but we’ll see what he can do.

My freshman year I had a t-shirt of the Suede album cover that I wore to death and I really, really, wanted to dance around in bubbles just like in the video. Oh, 1993…

  7. Stevie

Columbia sent me Suede’s B-sides as one of my music club selections one year, and so I never realized that “My Insatiable One” was a b-side. It’s as good as any a-side, you ask me.

“My Insatiable One” is also available on Sci Fi Lullabies, Suede’s two-disc b-sides collection.

If I remember correctly, there are two versions, one more piano-based…..

Both have been staples of my mix CDs since college.
