“TRL” Gets The “Live” Sucked Out Of It

73251999.jpgDuring the mass bloodletting at MTV last month, Christina Norman sent out a memo stressing that afternoon countdown show TRL would continue to air, although it would “operate more efficiently downstairs.” What did that mean, we wondered? Well, now we know:

Two weeks ago, MTV began taping ”Total Request Live” two days a week in an effort to save money. After live shows air Monday and Wednesday afternoons, shows are then taped for the following day.

”Total Request Taped”? No, the show’s title won’t be adjusted for the less-than-live days, spokeswoman Marnie Black said Tuesday.

”We’re not editing anything,” she said. ”We’re not changing anything. The spirit of the show is going to be exactly the same.”

Color us skeptical–it’s hard to think that Mariah Carey’s ice cream giveaway, to name but one example, would have survived the tape-delay process. Anyway, now that the show isn’t really live anymore, it’s time for some KFC-style rebranding for the three letters that make up the show’s name:

this isnt much of a change. TRL is frequently taped, especially when they do the summer shows. I found this out one day by happening to stay in Seaside when TRL was “live.” The beachhouse was empty except for crew and not a soul could be found on the beach.

Asking one of the crewguys whats up, he let me know that nearly 1/3 of the shows are taped always, especially if its a guest they are unsure of.

i think we’d all like to “operate more efficiently downstars” if you know what i mean.

Wrong-o. Well, a little. The studio is up for TRL Monday and Tuesday only. Those days air live, and the pre-tapes are shot in the mornings. The news segments for the Wednesday and Thursday shows are taped early in the morning the day of, and rolled into the pre-tape. All fascinating I know, but if you have a trashy 16 year old cousin who’s just dying to be in the audience, you might wanna give them a heads up.
