The Vault: The Flatmates Move In
The Flatmates formed in 1985 and knocked around the British indiepop scene until 1989–and yes, a few of their original members did really share a living space at the time of the band’s formation. Their speedy, sugar-rush indiepop, characterized by big choruses and echoing guitars, was equally indebted to the Ronettes’ shimmering harmonies and the Ramones’ penchant for keeping it brief. According to their MySpace page, they’re currently at work on new material, but for now, we’ll spotlight the A-sides of their first two singles, which are both semi-sappy songs about indie infatuation:
