There is a large market out there that wants–nay, craves–to have hour-long experiences in which they are yelled at by women with multi-hued hair. For those who don’t have the funds, or the inkling, to visit the less-than-reputable ladies who advertise in the local alt-weeklies, there’s Avril Lavigne’s The Best Damn Thing, which sold 286,000 copies last week to land at the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200.

Biggest Debuts: Entering the chart at No. 2 was Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero, which rode weeks of pre-release hype to a 187,000-copy first-week sales total. In 2005, NIN’s With Teeth sold 272,000 copies in its first week, and that was without any found USB drives in European bathrooms. American Idol‘s Bucky Covington sold 61,000 copies of his self-titled album, and that was enough to snag him the No. 4 slot.

Biggest Slides: The special edition of Beyonce’s B’Day sank to No. 13 from No. 7, but that number will probably fall off even more this week, thanks to Des’ree ringing the “hey, stop covering my song without permission” alarm.

Charting The Decline: The 8.16 million units-sold tally was up by 110,000 units (1.3%) from last week’s anemic total–a number that looks even worse when you take into account the fact that there were no six-figure sales totals last week, and two this week.

Nickelback Award For Inexplicable Durability: Oh, Akon. Even dry-humping a 14-year-old can’t stop you–your sales were only off 13%! That’s even more impressive than Daughtry, who’s hanging tough right behind you at No. 7. If you’re still in the thick of the chart next week, when the YouTube effect will have run its full course, we may have to give you a special achievement award.
