Hillary Clinton Targeting Elusive Smash Mouth-Loving Demo

May 17th, 2007 // 17 Comments

hillaryclint.jpgWe’ve been pretty upfront all along about who we’re voting for in next year’s presidential election: this guy. But because of equal-time requirements, we’re supposed to let you know that Hillary Clinton is asking America–or at least that portion of America that really enjoys voting for things online–to pick her campaign song. The nominees are one part Adlai Stevenson, one part Ally McBeal:

“City of Blinding Lights” – U2
“Suddenly I See” – KT Tunstall
“I’m a Believer” – Smash Mouth
“Get Ready” – The Temptations
“Ready to Run” – Dixie Chicks
“Rock This Country!” – Shania Twain
“Beautiful Day” – U2
“Right Here, Right Now” – Jesus Jones
“I’ll Take You There” – The Staple Singers

You can also submit your own nominees, but since this is one of the few candidate-sponsored polls that doesn’t require you to register with the site, we’re guessing that the write-in option has likely yielded plenty of Internet-crank answers. We also suspect that a certain jesus_jones231@earthlink.net will be busted for flooding the “Right Here, Right Now” option sometime next week.

Please, anything but “Suddenly I See” – I actually like bits of KT Tunstall’s stuff, but that song got run aground last year as the music bed for tons of TV promos. I even remember it popping up in The Devil Wears Prada and the closing scene of the first Ugly Betty episode. It’s become some kind of self-help, I’m-a-perky-girl-but-also-a-woman-who-can-stand-up-for-herself anthem, and a thin one at that.

  2. revmatty

I’m submitting “If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next”. Which is actually appropriate, I think.

shania, are you kidding me? cmon, hill, put on the femiladyist pants. no “deceptacon”? at the debates you could be all, hey barack, your health care policy is dumb like a linoleum floor.

or get sharon jones on the line. geez.

  4. J DTZR

I love that headshot of the Hill… She looks all, “I don’t have time for this nonsense, but my advisors said it would soften my image. Now crank up the Slayer!”

  5. nonce

Mystikal, “Danger.” No? ODB, “Got Your Money.” I’m voting whomever’s not Republican regardless of taste (though in my heart, Ralph Nader wins and his campaign song is Bjork’s “Earth Intruders.”

  6. TurdsAndWhey

We’ve been pretty upfront all along about who we’re voting for in next year’s presidential election:

    Doug Stanhope in ’08

Because we have done much, much worse.

  7. Nicolars

    @revmatty:

    That would be perfect.

  8. Jfrankparnell

As relentless as cancer, Jesus Jones persists, with no cure in sight.

I always thought her song would be Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” You know, for the sympathy vote.

  9. deusdiabolus

Regarding Jesus Jones: right band, wrong song.

  10. Ned Raggett

Beware the anger of the snooty right wing should Jesus Jones be evilly stolen by Hillary. Oh how I quake.

  11. The Mozfather

@millwhistle: LARF! It’s so true! His health care policy is dumb like linoleum floor!

  12. Diglett

Ditto on the Smash Mouth v. Monkees thing. I mean, I know Shrek the Third is coming out and everything, but come on.

Anyway, she’d hit like six birds if she just went for the Alanis “My Humps.”

  13. Dickdogfood

So, then…Hillary’s campaign message in a nutshell:

Suddenly I see the city of blinding lights where it’s a beautiful day and I’m a believer. I’ll take you there. Get ready. Get ready to run — right here, right now — and rock this country!

  14. Dickdogfood

Anyway, vote Jesus Jones just to piss this guy off.

  15. NickEddy

    No S.O.D.?

  16. Audif Jackson Winters III

Mims, “This Is Why I’m Hot”

Why the Smash Mouth version of “I’m A Believer” over the Monkees? Come on Hill, don’t give up your Boomer card that easy. Your people have about 10 years or so of relevance left.

  17. Breliant

Right Here, Right Now used to be Bill’s campaign music.
