Even The Elderly Benefit From Viral-Marketing Music Videos

Today’s U.K. Telegraph has a feature on the Zimmers, the senior-citizen rock group whose cover of “My Generation” has become a MySpace phenomenon (actually, does 1.5 million views even count as a “MySpace phenomenon” anymore? How many views did those hand-holding otters get?). According to the article, the Zimmers members have their sights set on world domination:

The band had interview requests from Brazil, Germany, Japan, and Iceland. In a fortnight’s time, members of the Zimmers will appear on US television, as fellow guests with George Clooney on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show…

[Documentary filmmaker Tim Samuels] tells me that there are plans for a Zimmers album; they’re taking song requests on their MySpace site. Current favourites include The Prodigy’s Firestarter and Oasis’s Live Forever.

“It would be great if we could get Liam Gallagher into the studio to sing with them,” he says. But first up is the big trip to LA. “The Seniors’ movement is much stronger and better established in the US,” he says, “which is why we’re getting such a big response over there.

Not sure what sort of stateside “movement” Samuels is referring to–we’re guessing he saw a few too many “I’m having a senior moment” novelty tee-shirts while vacationing in Boca Raton. We wish the Zimmers only the best for their stateside trip, but we’d be lying if we didn’t say that we’re concerned about the inevitable throw-down between them and the Young@Heart Chorus.
