Hallmark Trying To Touch Lucrative ’90s-Nostalgia Market

Jun 12th, 2007 // 7 Comments

Good news, people who came of age in the Clinton era! You’re now a target demographic for greeting cards, as evidenced by this recent Hallmark ad in which a doting father lives out his dream of re-creating the “U Can’t Touch This” video. But wouldn’t it have been more honest for the gift-recipient to instead fantasize about living out Rick James’ “Super Freak” video? We’re pretty sure 9 out of 10 balding suburban dads would rather wear sleeveless tops and crowd into coke limos than do the Hammer dance.

    Good lord god.

  2. Dan Gibson

At least as fantasies go, I’d like to think I could have it all: coke, limos, AND the Hammer dance. Hallmark, take me away!

  3. Chris Molanphy

Next question: would an aging Dad rather be taped “rollin’ in [his] 5.0″ or sporting a moustache and a canary-yellow jacket?

I have to admit I adore this commercial. That dude is pretty good.

Weirdly enough, I actually bought this card for my dad on a whim like 5 days ago without ever seeing an ad or anything.

This freaked me out so bad!! Does this mean “Head like a Hole” for aspirin ads? What about “Even Flow” laxative ads?
