We Never Had Beyoncé Pegged For A Kylie Minogue Fan

Beyoncé’s metamorphosizing-robot performance “Get Me Bodied” at last night’s BET Awards has caught the eye of a thousand Kylie Minogue obsessives, who are in a tizzy over the admittedly strong similarities between her arrival onstage and the way Minogue opened her shows way back in 2002. A clip of Kylie’s entrance is above, and we have to say that watching it, we felt a bit bad for B: On first watch, we thought she kinda looked like a dollar-store Oscar replica, but the performance’s low production values (are her suit’s doors creaking?) were made only more obvious after watching the Australian diva’s quite-form-fitting outfit, which was obviously inspired by repeated watchings of Tron.

Damn…between that tech-armor, and the outfit under it, it looks like Kylie knows how to put on a show.

All I could think of while watching was Derick Smalls desperately trying to be free of his faulty pod.

But, yeah, the Beyoncé thing was puny in comparison. It was hard to tell through the YouTubeness, but I think that B’s wasn’t even motorized. Are those just stagehands in black outfits moving around behind her?

Clearly, Ms. Minogue is into the robot thing — she had a tour (must have been in the past year) which opened with a horde of backup dancers dressed as Doctor Who cybermen, complete with samples from the show’s theme song and dialogue, and was sporting a bit of cyberman headgear herself.

Just wanted to point out years later: “How is it possible that all of you missed the Metropolis reference and the fact that every big female star in pop is alluding to the message of this classic film. Also, Beyonce’s replica was closer to the model of the actual Maria/Machine Man excepting the fact that she is curvy and the suit fit her. But may I say I absolutely love Kylie’s new video! Freaking rockin! But everyone should watch out…Beyonce and Gaga are releasing albums around the same time…I wonder if it isn’t on purpose, actually with their past work together I can’t see how it’s anything but.
