This Is Our Country: “The Singing Bee” To Continue Reign Of Off-Key Terror This Fall

Jul 17th, 2007 // 6 Comments

fatonetvpik0710.jpgWe sat through the lyrical pop quiz The Singing Bee last week, and we weren’t alone: The show scored the highest ratings of any new show this summer. Those big numbers resulted in NBC placing the Joey Fatone-hosted show–which puts its contestants through the paces of singing along with the Jack-FM playlist, and somehow is less brain-stimulating than it sounds–on its Tuesday-night schedule, where it’ll be sandwiched in between The Biggest Loser and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Because nothing gets you in the mood for stories about rape and child abuse like watching some excitable guy from Kansas trying to shout his way through “Wild Thing.”

I watched this last week and thought the concept wasn’t bad (I’ve seen other “guess-the-lyrics” shows become hugely successful in France and Quebec in the past 10 years). It looks and feels very much like a throwback to 1970s game shows. Now, if someone could only bring back the variety show!

  2. Feh Am Legend

@Thierry: What, America’s Got Talent isn’t enough for you?

  3. Bazooka Tooth

My wife made me watch this, and i wanted to put a power drill in my ears.

I forget what song it was, but everyone kept missing one line to some annoying 80′s crap song, and we had to listen to the chorus sung, incorrectly, like 8 times. I guess if i liked shitty Paula Abdul songs and Smashmouth, this show would be cool.

@Aquemini: You are thinking of Bananarama’s cover of “Venus,” I believe. And yes, I couldn’t believe that everyone was making THE SAME EXACT MISTAKE over and over.

  5. Thierry

@puffermedia: I think it’s missing something. Oh, wait, I got it: talent! But don’t get me wrong, I love rappin’ grandmas and precocious yodelers as much as the next guy…

  6. Bazooka Tooth

    Maura- Yes. FUCK.
“I’m your Venus, I’m your fire” has never been more annoying.
