The Bob Marley Ringtones: I And I Will Sue Your Ass

So, hey, remember those Verizon Bob Marley ringtones that we told you about yesterday? Well, it turns out they weren’t very irie after all, because the Marley family is going after both Universal and Verizon for bringing you your new “Buffalo Soldier” ringback:

According to Fifty Six Hope Road Music Limited, the agreement was signed “without the permission of the Marley family” and was “not in accordance with Marley’s longstanding contract with Universal Music Group.”

“UMG has not received any suit from the Marley Estate,” UMG says in a statement. “Moreover, claims made in a press release issued today by Palm Pictures are meritless. Specifically, we are offering Bob Marley ringtones through Verizon in accordance with the terms of a long standing contract between Bob Marley and UMG.” Representatives from Verizon were unavailable for comment at deadline.

I guess it’s a lot harder to rip off the Marleys when you’re a multinational entertainment corporation and an evil telecommunications conglomerate with draconian contracts who will never let me out of my terrible plan until after I’m dead at which time my children will inherit my lack of rollover minutes and crushing phone-related debt–ahem, sorry–rather than a bootleg T-shirt stall at homecoming.
