Britney Spears Gives Us A Little Bit More (And It Ain’t Half-Bad)

britab.jpgBritney Spears’ real comeback single makes its way out to the Internet just in time to beat Kanye West and 50 Cent at the “whose-leak-is-bigger-than-who” game. Good thing someone out there had enough sense to prevent her from popping out another weepy phone-call ballad…
ARTIST: Britney Spears
TITLE: “Gimme More”
WEB DEBUT: Aug. 30, 2007

ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: “It’s Britney, bitch,” Britney Spears announces at the beginning of her comeback single–right off, a change in attitude from the sad-sack track of hers that leaked last week, thank God. The spunky “Gimme More,” produced by Nate Danjahandz, Hills, is seriously channeling some aerobics-class-worthy club music, with Britney’s voice tweaked into full-on sex-kitten mode–but at the same time, the Casio-keyboard percussion is giving off a serious The Blow vibe to my obviously-indiepop-addled ears. (Although the lyrics to “Gimme More” are, as far as I can fathom, about being famous and wanting some guy’s body, so maybe someone should hook Britney up with Khaela Maricich if only for some writing exercises.) The bottom line: It’s not “Toxic,” but it sure as hell isn’t “Me Against The Music,” either.

WHERE TO FIND IT: Popcrunch has an MP3, although downloading is sloowwww going. Bring a book! Or just try getting it here.

    Hm, it’s kinda catchy.

  • Maura Johnston

@MJ: “Toxic” is one of my favorite pop songs of the past 10 years.

  • SexFlush

    I can dig it.

  • nyobserver

Brit-Brit sounds like she’s gettin’ her sexy back.

  • Dickdogfood

Last night, after I downloaded the song, I somehow managed to play two MP3s of the song semi-simultaneously and I thought, whoa, Britney’s going for that junkie vibe, I don’t know how I feel about this!

  • sweetivy

not too bad. all teh gays i know are loving this song, so atleast she’s keeping that base happy

  • Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee

    She’s still shitty.

    -Japanese guys from “Major League”

  • DeeW

    It’s pretty damn good.

And I’m gonna get my ass kicked for saying that.

  • GammaGirl

@DW: Im diggin it too! And I’m sure I will soon share your pain…

  • stix

Wow, this song is actually pretty good. Doesn’t even need a “for Britney,” qualifier.

  • Rilo-Andy

I admit it’s catchy as well, but damnit I want another “Toxic”….

My gym playlist is solely lacking…

  • Lucas Jensen

@MJ: yeah, I hate to say it, but you’re way off on that. Toxic still rocks dance parties. I think a Blow/Britney pairing up would be the jam.

  • also-ran

All you guys really like this? Really?

  • motoraway

Meh. At least it doesn’t have a Portishead-esque beat the last one had.

  • MJ

    @maura:

That’s fair enough (of the last ten years? Really?). I just can’t separate it from that ugly bearded guy on the plane and that leaping Britney nonsense.

  • Nunya B

I love it. I am not ashamed.

  • hotshot

Yeah, I think this song blows, too.

  • OJS

Wait–everyone on this site said that Madonna/Pharrel collab sucked, but they dig THIS?

  • Labtheque

@lovnmyredhead: Considering the success of Umbrella (ella ella ey ey), this is going to do pretty well. The whole playing field’s different now than from the bubblegum pop of the late 90s.

  • Rob Murphy

@MJ: Indeed, not only is “Toxic” Britney’s best track and one of the top 100-or-so of the “aughts” ['0#s], I can tell you as a professional DJ that it’s the only Britney song that “adults” ever request non-ironically.

Also, this new song is not bad. Heavily auto-tuned or pro-tooled or whatevs, but she needs that anyway. Kudos, you anonymous knob-twiddler!

  • Cam/ron

Descent stuff for a meat market, but nothing spectacular. Her voice is STILL nasal after 10 years. Oy.

  • The HZA. [member of the zombie nation]

    This does not suck. Wow.

  • bourgeoisie

    do not want.

    since when does catchy=good?

  • impalpable observer

    since when does catchy=good?

    Since when has it not?

  • bourgeoisie

@impalpable observer: catchy means if it comes on the radio I won’t turn it off. good means it’s worth paying money for.

  • Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee

@impalpable observer: Catchy has never been enough.

There has to be SOMETHING else.

That “Crazy Frog” shit is catchy, for chrissakes.

  • OJS

    Nickelback is catchy, too.

  • Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee

    @OJS: Bingo.

  • joemono

    So was the bubonic plague.

  • Maura Johnston

i use ‘catchy’ to describe catchy-good, and ‘fergie-like’ to describe catchy-bad. the numa numa song falls somewhere in the middle.

  • Sassafras

Did she bring Right Said Fred out of retirement to sing backing vocals?

  • the rich girls are weeping

There is so much mediocre mainstream pop afloat right now that this is a nice, refreshing change. Go, Brit! Now, stop driving around with the baby in your lap.

@maura: Word on Toxic. Also, can we get BritBrit and Kaela together? Or at least commission a YACHT remix of this track? Or get The Blow to cover it. LET’S DO IT!

@deadpool: Not a bad thing to sound like “Soccer Practice” Not at all.

  • Rob Murphy

I’ve been trying all morning to figure out what this sounds like, or how to describe it to someone who hasn’t heard it. Here it is:

If you’ve ever wondered how Gwen-Stefani-covers-”Sexyback” would sound, here’s your answer.

    How was that?

  • deadpool

Really? This sounds like Jonny McGovern’s “Soccer Practice.”

  • Audif Jackson Winters III

This is up there with the best work of Brooke Hogan.

  • bedofnails

Could we get more reverb on her vocals please?

  • lovnmyredhead

Yeah okay “Gimme”. Give me a break. That was it? That could have been anyone on that track. The same line over and over “Gimmee, Gimme, Gimmee” How redundantly boring. If she had released this at the beginning of her career, it would have gone nowhere.

  • hotshot

    @Audif Jackson Winters III:

    What it do, homie.

  • beautyinbrown

Not bad… I expected absolute crap, but its actually not half bad. Only thing is, she’s going to need a body double for the video because girlfriend is a hot mess!

  • venusangel

Wow, not bad, and I’m a musician… that’s saying something.

  • venusangel

*lol*, and not that I suck, beat you to it.

  • MJ

Is “Toxic” the highest standard to which a Britney Spears song can be measured? I thought it was pretty crappy. But then again, I must have been confused by its video.

  • Halfcatfacelose

Does anyone else think that Gimme More samples and then speeds up the fuzzy bassline from the Siouxsie and the Banshees song Red Light (from 1980′s Kaleidoscope)? Or am I just high?
Try [www.youtube.com] if I’m not ringing any bells.
And if I’m right, should I be pleased or disgusted?

  • nonce

I file it under “unexpectedly not bad.”

Because I don’t know my Rhianna from my Fergie, though, I’m presented with the mindfuck of “oh, lots of parts of the new Britney Spears song sound like The Knife.”

This make me think it might be possible that, somewhere right now, while Brit is whitening her kids’ teeth, she’s blasting Silent Shout.

  • Mezzy

    kudos danja…kudos

    hot production.
