Sex Tape “Definitely Not” Meg White

meggg2.jpgMeg White’s publicist issues a statement on this morning’s hottest viral video: “Some people have a very twisted sense of humor and this prank is in particularly bad taste. The tape circulating on the internet as featuring Meg White is fake. It’s definitely not Meg.” [Pitchfork]

If it really were her, I’m not entirely sure why it was posted on this site. Now that you’ve been informed it wasn’t Meg, I’m struggling to understand why the clip is still posted here.

C’mon, for being folks whose site and judgment I respect and who enjoy commenting on journo ethics, content and substance, Idolator has stumbled today. Must be thinking about the big party. I guess that surprise appearance by Jack and Meg won’t be happening.

    But there’s always the Nuge!

“Some people have a very twisted sense of humor boner”

@okiedoke: It’s still posted here because Idolator is still on the internet and all. I’m pretty sure “Meg White Sex Tape” will get them more clickthroughs that “Critiquing This Month’s Paste Reviews Section”

@WhineyPTW: The word “humor” was supposed to be crossed out in a humorous fashion, like people sometimes like to do on message boards.

But is the cost of the bandwidth and the revenue from click-throughs proportional to the ethical yield? You know, the ever present karma equation.

Yanking it and delivering a witty caveat/mea culpa seems appropriate. And mature.

Not that I don’t get off on somebody sharing boobs and poot, but …

@okiedoke: Sorry, but yanking the post is a terrible idea, one that evokes both the Orwellian memory hole and Catholic “let’s forget this ever happened!” repression. (I’m more of an expert on the latter than the former, I should note.) Posting the denial–twice, including one time in the original post!–suffices as far as mea culpas go. I mean, this was a story that pretty much ruled the day, and not posting on it would have been more suspect. First drafts of history (however tawdry said history might be) and all.

Serious question, one that I thought about earlier while crafting the post: Would you react differently–less protective–if the tape in question had been of a male star? I think it’s a legit, and interesting, topic for debate.

Maura – Thanks for asking. Gender of the principal has absolutely nothing to do with my reaction.

Thinking something’s a story that turns out not to be a story doesn’t mean it still belongs here, even it it ruled for a few moments. The memory hole could be quite artful.

Anyway, I hope you don’t feel the need to post any other wannabe/couldbe stuff. Real trash is good enough for me, and there’s plenty of it out there!

    @okiedoke

Dude- the story _is_ the story. Get it? That’s why it’s still online. Media introspection will keep this puppy going with very little effort (and merit is totally subjective). Hate to break it to you, but if you’re looking for journalism with values and standards- you’re looking for a different blog. And hey- if Gawker can make revenue off it and buy me an occasional beer- I’m all for it.

@okiedoke: “The memory hole could be quite artful.” The fact that you would write this disqualifies you from backseat editing or armchair ethics or whatever you’re doing. (I suspect you’re being douche.)

Could Maura have been any more, “I think this is BS and the news is that everyone’s covering it,” in her first post? Is it the art of the memory hole to pretend that never happened in order to create a false position of moral superiority?

“Anyway, I hope you don’t feel the need to post any other wannabe/couldbe stuff. Real trash is good enough for me, and there’s plenty of it out there!”

…and a pedant to boot. Maura, why don’t you execute commenters here?

It’s definitely fake. If it was really her she would have been completely silent the entire time. Besides, the whole thing pales in comparison to the Jack White/Jack Black tape that hit a while back…
