“Guitar Hero 3″ Gives Kim Gordon A Total Makeover

Oct 23rd, 2007 // 23 Comments

So YouTube has been invaded by Guitar Hero 3 demo clips in anticipation of the game’s release next week, because what’s more fun than watching other people be pretty good at video games that you’ll probably suck at while you’re stuck in front of a computer? Anyway, Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing” is one of the songs included in this go-round, and there are two things notable about the game’s take on it: 1, 16-year-old gamers around the world now have the power to imagine Kim Gordon as a cross between Ana Voog and a Delia’s catalog model; and 2, out of all the guitars out there, the axe of choice for the track is a freaking Flying V.

Dang. Why o’ why did I give away my PS2? Will someone at a Tech/New Media firm please give me a job, so that I can play this in the hip, fun conference room?

  2. CharlesRockyPamplin

why have they given Thurston Moore (or possibly, and more disturbingly, Lee Ranaldo) a ponytail and a huge rack? and since when did Steve Shelley wear a sweatband?

I can wait ’til version 4, when Black Flag are recreated as a cross between Good Charlotte and Up Wth People…

  3. Matthew Perpetua

Why isn’t their “Kim” playing bass? I mean, I know the real Kim hasn’t played bass on that particular song since the mid-90s, but still! Does the cartoon girl also have some arthritis or carpal tunnel issues?

  4. natepatrin

I’m not even going to ask who’s doing the Chuck D bit.

  5. Cam/ron

Now that Sonic Youth is on Guitar Hero, I’m looking forward to Glenn Branca’s guitar symphonies on GH – that would call for a 100-player game. Derek Bailey’s music should also be there (where gamers can play any damn note they please).

I hear if you use “Star Power” on the third chord (of four) in SunnO)))’s “Candlegoat” you get, like, a trillion points.

  7. Dead Air ummm Dead Air

I think people need to understand that you are not actually a digital Sonic Youth in the video game. Rather, you are just a fictional cover band playing these songs. So the digital girl in the clip who doesn’t look like Kim Gordon isn’t supposed to be Kim Gordon.

@Charlie Kerfelds Jetsons Tee: A GH meets D&D game would be amazing. “find Slash’s top hat- 1000 life points” “slay Steve Lukather- 500 strength points” “play rhythm guitar for Poison- minus 500 points”!

  9. mackro

I’d love to hear P!nk cover “Kool Thing”!

@Dead Air ummm Dead Air: Stop! That gets in the way of us being incensed at the supposed bastardization of our idols!
@Cam/ron: Steve Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint” is what I’m looking forward to. Completely repetitve music for 15 minutes as played by Pat Metheny, huzzah!

  11. Maura Johnston

@Dead Air ummm Dead Air: I know. But it’s still really weird to hear “Kool Thing” coming out of a lady not-very-dressed like that.

  12. brainchild

50 points for reminding me of the existence of Ana Voog.

  13. MTS

“Kool Thing” was the first song I ever heard by Sonic Youth and kind of the moment that changed my life forever (I was 13). I’m going to overlook the irony of these unrealistic female figures — who are wearing totes clichéd “rawk” outfits, I might add — singing about “male white corporate oppression”… for just a moment. Now that SY’s on GH, I really, really want one.

ANA VOOG? Jesus, why not dig up Jennicam while you’re at it?

  16. Maura Johnston

@sjc: I’m waiting for the right moment for that reference to drop!

  17. Lucas Jensen

I think you choose your character (is that Judy Nails?), and that is clearly the guitar part and not the bass part, so it’s more avatars than a representation of Sonic Youth. I love that they are on there. That looks like a blast.

  18. byebyepride

I know I’m out of touch with the modern world, but I genuinely have no idea what that’s all about. Is it a modern version of parapa (sp?) the rapper?

  19. Chris Molanphy

I’m going to make the disconnect on “Kool Thing” even deeper by playing this as Lärs Umlaut.

  20. Chris Molanphy

Oh, and by Guitar Hero IV I want to be able to play “The Diamond Sea” — all of it.

  21. Lucas Jensen

@dennisobell: Think about holding out those long notes with the whammy going. It’d be a real endurance test!

  22. mackro

There is so much RIGHT with having “Kool Thing” in Guitar Hero. By Evol or Sister, Sonic Youth embraced rock’s cliches of guitar acrobatics and moves to the fullest and most playful… only with the “wrong” tunings and training (even though they sounded a lot like classic heavy rock folks like early 70s Alice Cooper. But anyway…) so, in spirit and definitely not in custome, 3D avatars rocking out to “Kool Thing” makes more sense than the same avatars interpreting more polished bands of what have you.

The Male White Corporate Oppression deepens if you play this song on the strip club stage with the Axe Bodyspray-branded dancers.

    I’m really unfortunately not kidding.
