Does Rock Band Prove It’s All Been Downhill Since “Sabotage”?

ROCKBAND_x360PFTfront1boxart_160w.jpgSo the tracklist for Rock Band, the video game that one-ups Guitar Hero by giving you a set of digi-drums to pound on and a microphone in which to caterwaul, has finally dropped and… it’s kinda weird! David Bowie’s “Suffragette City” and Pixies “Wave of Mutilation”? Faith No More’s “Epic” and R.E.M.’s “Orange Crush”? There’s classic rock, because God would be angry if you called something Rock Band and didn’t include Aerosmith. (Or, uh, Molly Hatchet.) But it also looks like the programmers let their teenage 120 Minutes fantasies run as wild as licensing would allow them. And with so many odd, unexpected, and (especially in the case of the ’00s) crappy choices, we wondered which Rock Band decade rocks the most. Is it the one that gave us stadium-storming cock rock, the one that gave us college radio, or the one that gave us Jet and Coheed And Cambria?

Rock Band: The Complete Licensed Tracklist [IGN]

  1. Al Shipley

    Well, if they’re trying to highlight the drumming component by picking some songs that are more fun to air-drum than sing or air-guitar, then they at least did a good job with some of the selections (Tom Sawyer, In Bloom, Cherub Rock, Go With The Flow, Foreplay/Long Time, Ballroom Blitz, etc).

  2. Lucas Jensen

    C’mon, it’s a good one, though. Gimme Shelter, that is. Scorsese sure thinks so. Have you seen the downloads they are doing for this game? Nevermind, Who’s Next, and a Dead compilation! That’s amazing. And they are talking about doing funk albums and downloads. I would die to jam “Love City” on that drum pad.

  3. Chris Molanphy

    That ’00s list is really not bad. Yeah, I would’ve picked a few different songs by those same acts (the Chili Peppers song is especially weak); but that’s really a pretty respectable list considering its attempts at mainstream viability.

    My wife will be thrilled at the inclusion of “Say It Ain’t So” among the entire Weezer oeuvre.

  4. Diglett

    @dennisobell: Funny you say that, because my very first reaction to this whole thing was OMGOFALLTHEWEEZERSONGSTHEYPICKEDMYFAVORITEGO90s!!!!

  5. Weezy F Baby

    @Lucas Jensen:
    OMG!!! If I could drop some “Atomic Dog” or “Brick House”, I would sell vital organs to get me an XBOX or PSX or Wii with the fuckin’ QUICKNESS.
