PLUG Awards Keeping The Bases Covered

Nov 15th, 2007 // 25 Comments

plug.jpgNominees for the annual PLUG Independent Music Awards (a.k.a. Dudes! With! Beards!) were announced today, with few surprises and an excess of categorical minutiae. Let’s all work together to figure out why they’ve got separate categories for Best Album of the Year and Best Indie Rock Album of the Year.

Best Album of the Year
Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (Merge)
Band Of Horses – Cease To Begin (Sub Pop)
Battles – Mirrored (Warp)
Beirut – The Flying Club Cup (Ba Da Bing)
El-P – I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead (Definitive Jux)
Justice – † (Downtown / Vice / Ed Banger)
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (Polyvinyl)
Panda Bear – Person Pitch (Paw Tracks)
Radiohead – In Rainbows (self-released)
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – 100 Days, 100 Nights (Daptone)
Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge)
The National – Boxer (Beggars Banquet)

Best Indie Rock Album of the Year
Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam (Domino)
Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (Merge)
Band Of Horses – Cease To Begin (Sub Pop)
Battles – Mirrored (Warp)
Deerhunter – Cryptograms (Kranky)
Les Savy Fav – Let’s Stay Friends (Frenchkiss)
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (Polyvinyl)
Okkervil River – The Stage Names (Jagjaguwar)
Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge)
Sunset Rubdown – Random Spirit Lover (Jagjaguar)
The National – Boxer (Beggars Banquet)
The New Pornographers – Challengers (Matador)

Maybe one or two overlap albums would seem acceptable, but an even six? Excessive, music nerds! Find more efficient and logical ways of qualifying your snobbery!

PLUG Independent Music Awards [Official site]

  1. Maura Johnston

Radiohead isn’t “indie rock”? WHAT DO WORDS MEAN ANYMORE

  2. loudersoft

@maura: I guess all you have to do is release an album directly after years of being part of the major label machinery to become indie rock again.

    Take that, Oasis!

  3. AL

It’s pretty disgusting how male-dominated those lists are, especially considering strong records from St. Vincent, Marnie Stern, Celebration, M.I.A., etc. that would seem to appeal to this same crowd.

  4. BeRightBack

@aluberalles: And PJ Harvey, who seemed kind of a gimme, especially since the list of nominees are so capacious. I count two bands containing girls on each list, and two of them are the same band (Arcade Fire). I could be wrong, though, I don’t know anything about Okkervil River, for example. But still: WTF, beardos.

  5. Michaelangelo Matos

PJ Harvey’s on a major, though. So too is M.I.A. (sigh)

  6. BeRightBack

@BeRightBack: “lists of nominees” I meant. Bleeeargh.

  7. DavidWatts

At least half of those records are total crap.

  8. BeRightBack

@Matos: So I guess it comes back to the central question of the post once more: what the hey is the difference between the two lists?

  9. BeRightBack

Is it the “rock” part? Even with Battles? Do Radiohead use too many keyboards? Of Montreal rocks harder than Beirut? Oog, I’ve got to stop thinking about this.

  10. the rich girls are weeping

Why, it’s so that El-P album can be nominated for album of the year, duh. *cough*worldsfairballotboxstuffing*cough*

@Matos: When did M.I.A. sign to a major? Isn’t she on XL still?

    I hate “indie rock.”

  11. katie_a_princess

    guys, justice isn’t good.

  12. Michaelangelo Matos

    @therichgirlsareweeping: It’s on Interscope in the U.S.

  13. the rich girls are weeping

@Matos: Huh, I had no idea. I’ll go crawl back under my rock now.

  14. Labtheque

@DavidWatts: At least half? You’re lowballing there. I’d say at least 3/4ths.

  15. The Van Buren Boys

Ugh, these nominees are so obvious. They’ve pretty much just copied everything that Pitchfork has hailed all year. The least they could do is nominate a couple albums that were largely overlooked all year (Menomena).

  16. jt.ramsay

How many people actually finished their nominee ballots on time? I think I nominated Google Search for Best Music Website.

  17. MTS

Album of the Year: Includes people of non-Caucasian origin.

Indie Rock Album of the Year: White People-palooza

I still don’t “get” the PLUG Awards. Maybe it’s better that way.

  18. SuperUnison

@aluberalles: “In Advance of the Broken Arm” is my favorite album this year. I’ve seen her twice live and she’s been amazing both times, like watching someone grapple with a whole universe inside their brain. At the very least she singlehandedley obliterates fucking “Neon Bible.”

  19. Anonymous

@The Van Buren Boys: Ummmm, wasn’t menomena best new music also????

Don’t mean to call bullshit here–okay, I do.

Anyway, nothing gets overlooked in the internet age. It all gets compressed in white neo-schmalz. That’s why its perfect in Richard K. Dick kind of way. Just be happy your alive.

  20. heyzeus

A vote for Okkervil River is a vote for the mostly unbearded great indie rock hope of America.

  21. Dick Laurent is dead.

@jmb112485: You mean Philip K. Dick, and yes I agree, it’s a bright beautiful future we’re looking at…

  22. The Van Buren Boys

@jmb112485: Good call on that. It just seems like a lot of people have forgotten about that album since it was released back in January which is like 10 years in internet time.

  23. Catbirdseat

@The Van Buren Boys: Even more evidence of my assertion that tracking “Best Of” lists on a year-long scale should be done away with. More appropriate now would be people making lists for “Best Albums of the Last Three Months,” or “Best Albums This Week,” or “Best Album Of The Last Fifteen Seconds (The Duration Of My Attention Span).”

but radiohead is nominated for ‘best album’ and not on the ‘best INDIE album’
