Orange County New Year’s Eve Bash Less Death Cab-y Than Expected

With a month and a half left in a glorious year sure to be remembered in a delightful VH1 special someday, it’s time to start making those New Year’s Eve plans. And by “making those New Year’s Eve plans,” I mean booking your flight to the John Wayne Orange County Airport for OCNYE, the ultimate in Los Angeles-metropolitan-area-adjacent -end-of-the-year entertainment! If the “Wine Country” and “Country Thunder” specialty areas weren’t quite enough to lure you, there will be bands you’re tried desperately to forget playing there!

And for folks Of a Different Sensibility — and we don’t say that disparagingly — there is OCNYE, which this year moves south from its former fairgrounds location to the Oaks Blenheim Events Center in San Juan Capistrano. The third annual affair, which features a pyrotechnics-filled “Orange Drop,” features Third Eye Blind, the Psychedelic Furs, Berlin, the English Beat, a handful of tribute acts and some local acts too. GA tickets are $55 until next Thursday; $65 if purchased before Dec. 15.

The real excitement might be in the selection of “tribute acts” playing the event. Not only will there be “No Duh,” America’s most faithful No Doubt tribute act, and some guys with tattoos pretending to be Sublime, attendees can rock out to Dead Man’s Party, possibly the only Oingo Boingo tribute act in existence. I just hope the guy playing Leon Schneiderman gets his essence right, otherwise the whole thing is going to be a huge disappointment. Regardless, I think I’m going to hold out and see who Seth Cohen books for the Bait Shop. I think Tom Vek might be opening for the Subways.
