The Worst Album Cover Of The Year Tournament Brings You A Gift-Wrapped Final Four

Dec 24th, 2007 // 13 Comments

makeitstop.jpgSo! Today begins the semifinal round in our Worst Album Cover Of The Year Tournament (voting lasts until 11:59 p.m. ET Wednesday, and the finals begin Thursday). Ted Nugent’s special-edition Love Grenade cover has been the favorite since way before our bracket was even constructed, but remember: Nugent’s opponents, Megadeth, were the ones who knocked out the other Love Grenade cover. And the United Abominations cover does have the advantage of kinda living up to the name of the album it’s representing. Vote after the jump!

i guess nobody else is sitting at work anxiously awaiting for this moment the way that i was. this pairup makes me want to write an essay about cultural brainwashing and how nobody on all those damn vh1 shows ever brings up stuff like this when they talk about how awesome every moment within living memory is/was.

  2. Maura Johnston

@bcapirigi: wow, we might have to have an old-school rematch of this pairing when this tournament’s all said and done!

I don’t know if it’s my computer or your personal bias, but I love how when I click on their thumbnails, Nugent’s cover is half the size of Megadeath’s. Hell, I wouldn’t want to see the former cover any bigger anyway.

I also love the radioactive Megadeath font, no matter what anyone says.

    Nugent wins.

Is the Nuge going to win anything when he takes the crown here? A giant belt buckle with the Love Grenade cover replicated in precious gems, perhaps? He’s probably already got that. What do you give the Nuge that’s got everything?

  5. MTS

Now I can’t wait for NUGE AS THE NEWS, my Catpower-Meets-Ted-Nugent tribute act, to release a record. We’re totally using the Nugent cover, except Chan Marshall’s head will be poorly photoshopped in. You really haven’t lived until you’ve heard “He War” the way the Nuge intended.

The thing about the Megadeth cover is, I think it’s a really great, vivid use of texture and color. It’s just that the muddled visual detail, confusing imagery, and lousy fonts that make it look more tacky than beautiful. But I’d totally hire the designer of that cover and just carefully veto their bad ideas and keep the good ones.

Seriously, this isn’t fun anymore. Everyone is just voting for the Nuge cover because it’s misogynistic, but it’s not really the worst.

  9. PrinceHal

@MTS: Fantastic. Please keep me informed.

For me, this is the real championship match right here.

That it’s a Nuge blow out is like getting super excited about the Super Bowl, only to have it be a blowout.

Let’s send the Nuge a Pick-Me-Up Bouquet if he wins.

The Nuge cover is pretty repulsive as it seems to have shoved as much misogyny into an image as possible. Really he could just have written “I enjoy having sex with women but I really can’t see any other use for them,” and have been done with it. Instead he went ahead and put a grenade in her mouth. And that’s really pretty impressive.

But you know, that’s our Nuge. The Megadeth cover on the other hand is just an absolute mess. Just what the hell is going on there? There’s more explosions on that cover than in Michael Bay’s entire oeuvre. Not to mention the angel of electricity carrying… Is that’s supposed to be Vic? I don’t know. That Megadeth cover is like a cornucopia of awfulness, it really just keeps on giving.

holy shit, i’ve been staring at that megadeth cover for months now and i JUST realized the united nations building is the skyscraper exploding in the background, and that the title of the album is an incredibly lame pun based on that image. if only i’d realized that before i voted…
