Mr. Versatile Says Om Nom Nom

Maybe it’s just because the only food I’ve got in the house is a half-eaten jar of pickles and a hunk of ciabatta bread hard enough to crack a hockey helmet, but today I can’t stop listening to “Fill Up Mi Portion,” a 2007 collaboration between U.K. producer Toddla T and dancehall chatter Mr. Versatile that I only discovered during year-end list mania. In the Liquid Television-ish video, hungry little Pac-Men hunt for fish and chips in time to the buzzing electro beat before eventually swallowing London whole. But charming as the visuals are, it’s the lyrics that find the quickest route to my heart. Can you argue with a line like “rice and peas and chicken are nice” at lunchtime? I sure can’t.
