AP070209030462.jpgFansites, get those new URLs ready: Miley Cyrus has now changed her name to–hang on to your cowboy hats–Miley Ray Cyrus. Just in time, too, what with Simon Cowell officially dissing “Achy Breaky Heart” on last night’s Idol, just in time for Miley–sorry, Miley Ray*–to appear on the forthcoming Idol Gives Back special, guaranteeing awkward moments and great television. [CNN]

*Srsly, can we make it official Idolator policy that her name is always written “Miley Ray Cyrus”?

The CNN blurb is misleading. Miley was born “Destiny Hope Cyrus”. “Miley” was a nickname her Dad gave her when she was a (younger) child, and she ended up using that professionally. So what she really just did was change her name from DHC to MRC.

Because “Miley” is obviously an odd-sounding nickname, I’ll explain further. Billy Ray used to call her “Smiley Miley” or something like that when she was a baby/toddler because she was always so happy. That eventually got shortened to “Miley” or “Miles”. Soon, that’s just what everyone called her. She’s just gone ahead and made that her legal name.

Hey, you make fun of it when Puff Daddy changes his name to P. Diddy, too. It’s not like he was born with either of those names.

a guy at work was trying to tell me she’d changed her name to “Diddy. Well, not ‘Diddy’ but something like that…”

imagine my disappointment when i found out it was neither Diddy nor anything like it.

I suspect it’s just so that, when Miley gives birth at the age of 17 or so, people don’t continuously refer to said infant as “Destiny’s Child.”

I am furious with myself for laughing so hard at my own damn posting
