Sebastian Bach Going Country? It May Not Be As Much Of A Stretch As You Think

May 6th, 2008 // 1 Comment

The second season of Gone Country, the “anyone can be a Nashville star–especially people who have already been famous once” competitive reality show on CMT, is filming in Nashville right now! Aspiring amateur paps in the 615 should be on the look out for Sebastian Bach, Irene Cara, Mikalah Gordon (who came in 11th on season four of American Idol–Amanda Overmyer, there’s hope for you yet!), Jermaine Jackson, former Eminem target Chris Kirkpatrick, Lorenzo Lamas, and Sean Young. Why this show is really necessary or “funny” is still up for debate, given that Cascada’s version of Rascal Flatts’ “What Hurts The Most” was only the most recent example of the ever-shrinking boundaries between country and every other pop genre today. But hey, I guess everybody needs a job, and this season of the show will pair each contestant with two songwriters for country-songwriting purposes. Which made me wonder: what would happen if some of the contestants recast their own work for the show?

Obviously, Irene Cara’s “Fame” could easily be recast as a country ballad:

The pleading vocals! The gearshift key change! And that solo in the middle can definitely be performed on a slide guitar.

Sebastian Bach’s crossover candidate is pretty obvious:

Unless, of course, CMT censors the gun talk like its sister networks.

As for Jermaine Jackson, I have no idea. But please take a moment to watch this video featuring Pia Zadora.

What the hell is going on here? Is that Peter DeLuise? And are those asymmetrical sunglasses comfortable at all?

But I think the dark horse, country-crossover-wise, is Chris Kirkpatrick. Listen to “It’s Gonna Be Me” and tell me if you can’t hear it being nipped and tucked into a country track. (He did sing a line on that song, right?)

Lamas and Young can fill in for JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake! It’ll be genius. Chris Kirkpatrick, you are the next Julio Iglesias Jr.

I actually saw Mikalah playing a country pop star on the episode of The Unit a couple of months ago. Her performance was really very good and the songs she sang were really good too. I can’t wait to see more!! I think she is going to surprise a lot of people.
