Radiohead Dethrones Nirvana As Kings Of The Modern-Rock List Realm

May 29th, 2008 // 20 Comments

200px-Radiohead_creep.jpgRadio phoenix WOXY held its yearly countdown of the top 500 songs that are still in its playlist over Memorial Day weekend, and its many quibble-worthy points (“Feel The Pain” makes the cut while “The Wagon” doesn’t? Is “Supernova” really the only Liz Phair song that’s better than “Are You Gonna Go My Way?”) are topped by the fact that heading the list up is Radiohead’s “Creep.” But I thought people were into Thom Yorke et al for their innovations! Anyhoo, Radiohead placed nine songs on the countdown, which seems to be the biggest single-band total on the list, a feat for which they’re tied with R.E.M. Also of note: Hum’s 1995 song “Stars” debuted on the list this year, for which they can likely thank Cadillac. The long, long list after the jump.

Yes! Veruca Salt, Bob Marley AND Fugazi.

  2. Chris Molanphy

Interesting tidbit: at the actual WOXY site, they’ve bolded the songs that are new to the list this year. The highest-charting new track, at No. 212, is Daft Punk’s “Da Funk.” I guess they’ve finally entered the canon in a big way.

  3. futurehorse

Oh man, I just got the “Battle Flag” 12″ the other day, and, needless to say, my apartment has seen a serious spike in bedroom dance parties this past week.

  4. Captain Wrong

is it weird that as I age, I like the music of my youth less and find it more silly for the most part? I always assumed as i aged that I’d become convinced that the music I grew up with was the best music ever ala the boomers.

  5. baconfat

Do they really play “Marquee Moon”? Like, all 10+ minutes of it?

  6. Eugene Langley

I had no idea anyone still cared about “Laid”. I am happy to see that someone does, but in any universe, does it actually beat everything in the Beastie Boys, Bjork and New Order catalogs?

  7. TheRunningboard7

As someone with an almost complete distaste towards Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I was happy to see “Maps” ranked so high. Don’t know why, but I like that one.

I sadly scrolled the whole thing hoping to see Bear vs. Shark :(.

  8. FionaScrapple

Fuck the Violent Femmes. Make that bullshit Burger King jingle just go the fuck away!

    Worst.
    Song.
    Ever.

  9. tigerpop

“Waiting Room” always makes it onto this type of list, but do any modern-rock stations actually play it?

  10. Dick Laurent is dead.

I’m surprised by the amount of Madchester/Britpop era stuff on here, I’d give someone else’s right arm to hear a Pulp song on the radio, or even the Charlatans.

  11. PrinceHal

    Fucking-a right, Hum.

  12. Maura Johnston

@PrinceHal: hey, i’m just saying it’s overdue recognition!

  13. Anonymous

    @Captain Wrong. Yes. It’s weird.

  14. cassidy2099

    This is a goodass list.

  15. GiantPanda

i can’t believe that float on is the highest rated modest mouse song… gross…

  16. Halfwit

@owenmeany: Actually, I just put together a list of “90s Alternative Awesomeness.” It was restricted to the songs that would’ve played on my suburban “modern rock” station between 92 and 98 (middle school – high school), so I don’t think the majority of the songs would even make this type of canon. I actually found myself digging up the blatant cash-in one-hit wonders and post-grunge also-rans more than the “great” songs of the period.

  17. Anonymous

    @GiantPanda:

Yeah, I thought that was pretty lame.

Shudder to Think’s “Ex French T-Shirt” was probably the strangest song to be on Q101 in the 90s, but i’m probably the only one who thinks it was also one of the best.

While I feel the same way about bands from my youth seeming trite and lame nowadays (can you hear me, The Nixons?), I have to say that Hum still makes me want to go out there and blow something up. In a good way.

The picks for older punk bands are either cliche (tv party for black flag, holiday in cambodia for dead kennedys, institutionalized for suicidal, bitchen camero for dead milkmen)or mid to late career period (x, the clash, social distortion, pretenders, meat puppets, husker du). The list is better on the ramones and pistols (and great to see x-ray spex), but it’s as if there’s no real love for early punk, unless it’s a one-off goofy hit or at a point where the band tamed down a bit. I am happy to see 80′s by killing joke, though.
