I Don’t Get The Rolly At All

Sony’s newest digital music player, Rolly, has hit American shores, and in a crowded marketplace where even the Zune can’t seem to get a foothold, it’s important to have an fresh angle. Which is why the Rolly dances!

Sony’s dancing egg seems like 20 minutes of entertainment or so, but at $400 a pop, you’d think it might have a little more going on features-wise.

Turn the music player on and it’ll spin and roll to the beat of music playing through built-in speakers. While it dances, it’ll put on a colorful light show and move its tiny arms and shoulders. Shaped like an egg ready to roll off a kitchen counter, the player comes preloaded with music and choreography for “Girlfriend” “Boogie Wonderland” and the theme from “2001 – A Space Odyssey.” It also can play music stored in its 2 gigabytes of internal memory and dance to moves created with the included choreographer software. Plus, music can be streamed from a PC or mobile phone via a wireless Bluetooth connection.

2 gigs, eh? And you can use it as a wireless speaker of some sort when it’s not busy bustin’ a move? If I wasn’t easily distracted by shiny things that light up and move, I’d be dubious of whether I was getting my money’s worth on this thing.

Look at it go!

You know, for five bucks, I can get my son to dance to Salt N Pepa’s “Push It” and swing around a flashlight. That might be slightly more cost-effective.
