It’s good to see the film blog The Criterion Contraption back in action after a prolonged absence; the blog features LA writer Matthew Dessem reviewing each DVD in the Criterion Collection, in order. His write-up of the 1938 Pygmalion begins with this lead: “Pygmalion is the story of a beautiful young woman who moves in with a pedantic jerk. And yet it was written nearly 100 years before my girlfriend and I found an apartment together.” George Bernard Shaw, a nation of indie jerks who flout their tastes over everyone else’s thanks you for setting the precedent.
