Siobhan Donaghy Is Looking For A New Home

Here is what happens when you make my No. 1 album of a calendar year, apparently: Your label drops you “due to lack of commercial success.” At least, that’s what’s happened to former Sugababe Siobhan Donaghy, according a post on the Popjustice boards. Sure, it’s unsurprising, given that Ghosts was fairly avant-garde as far as pop albums go and EMI, which owns Donaghy’s label Parlophone, is tightening its belt under new steward Guy Hands. But that explanation is kind of a load of crap, particularly because one could argue that said low sales were, at least in part, due to numerous botch jobs on behalf of her label. You may remember the tales of how it delayed the release of Ghosts until long after it was leaked and shipped “old jazz records from the ’70s” in its stead when it finally came out. On the bright side, a few independent labels are apparently keen to snap her up, and not only will they probably embrace her off-kilter aesthetic, they’ll probably be well-run enough to actually check shipments before they go out. Full announcement after the jump.

Hey everybody.

I am not sure if it has already been posted here but I found out on Saturday that Siobhan was to be dropped today by Parlophone with the official line of “Due to lack of commercial success”

I could not post this news earlier as I wanted it to be announced by Siobhan herself or her people & it would seem that it has been put up on her official forum earlier today.

I have heard though that two independent label’s are keen to sign her already which I think personally is the best thing for Siobhan.

I can’t see her getting another big contract with a big commercial record company & especially with the type of music she does an independent label could do wonders for her.

So again it is bad news for the former Sugababe, but hopefully she will finally find the right label for her, they do say 3rd time lucky afterall.

The thread that ensues, by the way, mentions both Tracey Thorn and Charlotte Hatherley, with Hatherley, who’s put out music on her own, being cited as a possible blazer for Donaghy’s future career path.

One more time, the video for “Don’t Give It Up”:

(The first question I thought of when I heard the news: What’s going to happen to her MySpace URL?)
