Hey, it’s only two months until the CMJ Music Marathon, during which bloggers, college-radio employees, artists, and other assorted music-biz hangers-on congregate on the streets of New York City! And just in time to start getting excited about getting excited, the folks at the marathon have released the initial list of artists participating in the show. After the jump, we break down the artists that have been listed so far by a few identifying characteristics.

Number of bands whose names start with the word “black”: 2 (Black Hollies, Black Taxi) Number of bands whose shows I had better not wind up at by accident, because they are really lousy: 2 (3OH!3, Takka Takka) (NB: This number may grow.) Number of bands named after Amish rites of passage: 1 (Rumspringa) Number of bands whose name made me say, “oh, so they’re still running with that gimmick, huh”? 1 (AIDS Wolf) Number of bands who I hope aren’t named after unfortunate trends of the early millennium: 1 (Micachu) Number of David Mamet spouses on the bill: 1 (Rebecca Pidgeon) Number of of bands whose show will probably serve as a cruel reminder of all the potential they had way back in 2006: 1 (Annuals) Number of bands who are coming off putting out some of my favorite music of 2007: 4 (Wye Oak, Marnie Stern, Roisin Murphy, Beach House) Number of shows I’m already not looking forward to not getting into: Too many to list (Lykke Li, Vivian Girls, Juliana Hatfield, Mirah…)
