Will The Power Of 15 Divas’ Egos Be Enough To Cure Cancer?

Aug 19th, 2008 // 10 Comments

AP070909040845.jpgWell, probably not, but that’s not stopping Rihanna, Beyonce, and 13 other ladies from lending their pipes to “Just Stand Up,” an LA Reid and Babyface-produced track that will come out on Sept. 2. Proceeds from the track will go to support Stand Up To Cancer, an organization trying to raise funding for research against the disease that is also sponsoring a Sept. 5 telethon on CBS, NBC, and ABC. (I guess being against cancer is a stance that doesn’t have enough “attitude” for the folks at Fox.) The full list of singers (compiled by MTV) after the jump.

Mariah Carey
Beyoncé
Mary J. Blige
Rihanna
Fergie
Sheryl Crow
Miley Cyrus
Melissa Etheridge
Ashanti
Natasha Bedingfield
Keyshia Cole
Ciara
Leona Lewis
LeAnn Rimes
Carrie Underwood

I don’t envy whoever had to figure out who, exactly, got top billing in this roster, I’ll tell you that much.

Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Rihanna, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, More Collaborate On Cancer Benefit Single [MTV]

Damn. That is going to be a whooooole lot of shouting and oversinging.

P.S. That photo up top reminds me of one of those “candid” group photos you take at a party and/or club in which you don’t realize til the next day that a stranger pulled their head into the frame trying to be funny. In other words, it looks like Rihanna totally snuck into the frame right after someone shouted ‘say cheese!’

  2. ITMS

Well, this is the closest Keyshia Cole’s ever going to get to collaborating with Mary J.

  3. Al Shipley

@Tauwan: Don’t be ridiculous, these kinds of all-star charity records have always relied on “one at a time, half a verse couplet per B-lister, one chorus per A-lister” formula.

  4. Tauwan

    @Al Shipley:

Good point. I saw all those “divas”* listed and automatically had that shout fest from the tail end of One Sweet Day play in my head. My bad.

*Please let’s hope this stays in the studio and isn’t resurrected as Divas Live 2008. Some of those specials, and duets, were just plain unbearable.

  5. narymary

I hope Ciara gets her on line. It’ll be really hard to whisper-sing above all those belters.

  6. bcapirigi

ashanti? really? was jojo too busy?

  7. Rob Murphy

I’ll chime in to note that there are at least two cancer survivors on that list (maybe more I don’t know about).

I hope this record is great, but I’m sure to buy it anyway.

  8. Anonymous

Al Shipley: only problem might be figuring out who is “B List” and who isn’t.

Crow and Etheridge are possibly the least relevant of the group, but they both have been around a long time. And they are the two cancer survivors, so that probably qualifies for a lot.

and could all this make Miley Cyrus and Fergie *gulp* A-List? YIKES.

What would be awesome is if they made Mariah and Leona share a verse, or Ri-Ri and B. Drama!

  9. There’s clearly a great deal to understand about this. I believe you created some very good points in Features also.
