Another Day, Another Set Of British Award Nominations

Sep 2nd, 2008 // 8 Comments

qmagazinelogo.jpgThe oft-empty portion of my heart that just wants to watch awards shows every hour of every day makes too many of my days meaningless and my nights lonely. If only I could relocate to England, where there’s an award programme for every man, woman and child. Today’s set of nominations are from the Q Awards, to be presented Oct. 6, and let’s just say the Fleet Foxes should invest in some nice suits for the occasion.

I don’t dislike Fleet Foxes as much as some people around here, but a nomination for Best Album? Really? Also, I spent some time trying to discern the difference between a “New Act” and a “Breakthrough Artist” but then my head started to hurt, and I wanted to take a nap.

Also, if I live to be a thousand years old, I don’t think I’ll be able to understand the British love of Kings of Leon. I’m just not able to piece it together.

    How did Kings Of Leon get a nod for “Best Live Act”?

    Isn’t that Keane song brand new (as in on an album that’s not officially released until Oct)? If so, how did that qualify for this?

  2. bcapirigi

    i think the breakthrough artist is for a solo person and the best new act is for a band. although why they had to title the awards that way is beyond me.

    also, does anyone anywhere think oasis are the best act in the world today?

    UK love for KoL and FFs are both pretty easy to trace: “Americana” exerts a powerful pull for a lot of British writers, and the longer the beards the better. (Also, re: FFs, the Brits are perennial suckers for anything with heavy traces of Pet Sounds.)

  4. Michaelangelo Matos

    (I really shouldn’t have put Americana in quotes; I didn’t intend to mock the designation, just poke a little fun at the way Brits exoticize it, just as we Yanks deserve our pokes for doing the same with them and every other goddamn thing.)

    Wait, Kings of Leon as “best act in the world today”? What?!?

  6. Nunya B

    Well, at least that Goldfrapp video is legitimately incredibly entertaining.

    Like most award nominations, these are somewhat perplexing. But I will defend Fleet Foxes (Maura is anti-FF? For shame!). As for Michaelangelo Matos‘s comment, I’ll add that this canuck is a perennial sucker for anything with heavy traces of Pet Sounds too.

    @cheesebubble: Maura is not alone.
