One thing about the current vogue for super-stompy pop singles: It makes me wonder if, instead of “the future,” many of today’s leading pop tartlets aren’t looking back to 2004, when former S Club 7 lead singer Rachel Stevens hooked up with song-melding knob twiddler Richard X for the champagne-soaked ode to getting to the top by any means necessary “Some Girls.”. (The allusions to oral sex didn’t stop the track from being used as the anthem for a British charity–take note, ladies.) Perhaps they’ve just been catching up with their record acquisitions from then in recent days? In any event, listen to “Some Girls” above and the two newer tracks below, and tell me that you don’t hear a lot of similarities.

“Womanizer,” co-written by the Atlanta production duo the Outsyders:

“Keeps Gettin’ Better,” which was co-written by Aguilera and Linda Perry:

Sure, the Aguilera song has a bit of a Goldfrapp feel to it as well, but then again, they’re both sipping from the same trough in this case. I
