Hulk Hogan’s Rock And Wrestling: Old And New

When we got wind of Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling, which premieres on CMT this Saturday, we were more than a little disappointed. The only musicians participating in this thing are Tiffany and, yes, Frank Stallone (as the show’s Web site succinctly declares, “actor, singer, Sylvester Stallone’s brother”). But if you’re a child of the ’80s, you surely remember a time when the Hulkster cavorted with a much higher level of musical star. Who among us can forget that magical Saturday afternoon when all of a sudden the little bedroom black & white TV suddenly gained a surge of color thanks to the overflowing orange coif of the woman that was, as Mean Gene Okerlund describes her, “rock and roll’s biggest success story of 1984”: Cyndi Lauper. I’d forgotten how central Captain Lou Albano and those ridiculous rubber bands hanging off his beard were to my childhood. If only they could have gotten Frank Stallone back then: think of the drama, the glory, the endless crescendoing guitarmonies. [CMT]
