The Coltrane Church Is In Trouble

in San Francisco, a 37-year-old African Orthodox Church which worships Jesus through the intervention of John Coltrane (who has been sainted by the denomination), is having money troubles in our new extra-lousy economy. In an odd turn of events, I met the church’s Archbishop and lead saxophonist on a bus in San Francisco years ago and although I haven’t managed to be in the area on a Sunday since, he seemed to be one of the most genuine and kind pastoral types I’ve ever met. It would be a loss to the area if the church didn’t make it, it would seem ; San Francisco would lose a spiritual and cultural landmark. I’ll put on A Love Supreme and offer up a prayer later on today in hope. [AP via MSNBC]
