A Note On That Whacked-Out Animal Collective Cover

Oct 24th, 2008 // 11 Comments

The designer speaks: “neither weed nor Photoshop were used in the creation of the cover. say what you will about the aesthetics of the cover–I could care less about that–but the idea that one could light up a joint and make that cover happen in Photoshop shows a total lack of understand of both weed and the Adobe suite of software. Seriously: try it and get back to me.” Hey, the weekend is coming up, so why not? [Earlier]

    This guys so butt hurt.

I’d seen the optical illusion before it had the purple background.

  3. Lucas Jensen

For the record, Idolator itself never mentioned Photoshop or weed, to my knowledge.

If this means that more Animal Collective fans will go to the library and borrow math/science optical illusion books, then that’s fine by me.

Human vision induction + math = good times.

I might add, this is coming from someone who likes Black Dice and realizes the hypocrisy of his position. Regardless, I’m a design student and I still say that cover’s like pissing-about for 30 minutes, intoxicated, on a graphics program.

@Dick Laurent is dead.: we’ll talk aesthetics once you graduate.

@fna: you’re right. its based on the work of Akiyoshi Kitaoka, who has a crapload of stuff up on his website, here:

i don’t deny that one could go there, copy a .jpg into Photoshop and tweak the colors for a while after a couple of bong hits and get something that moves. even a design student can do that. but get it to print in CMYK at 12″ square and still get the movement effect is another thing.

Should I worry if it’s not doing the ripply thing anymore when I look at it….am I dead?

@cplaterecs: when i saw the post on this the other day i thought: hey, i bet i know who designed that… hi rob!

They’re Animal Collective. What else did you expect? Has anyone else seen the video for “Water Curses”? Now that’s some trippy stuff.

Ok, so come May, when I still find this cover boring (like most Op Art in general) it’ll have more weight thanks to a bit of paper? All of which is a bit pointless as I don’t like Animal Collective, so of course I’ll not be buying the album.
