Go Fish Fights A War That You Probably Had Forgotten Existed

I had the occasion to drive a rental car across Arizona last week without bringing along any CDs, so I ended up flipping back and forth between the three Christian pop stations that seem to possess the only viable FM signals out in the middle of the desert. While I’ve spent some time as an apologist for Christian music on here in the past, I want to take it all back, thanks to the act Go Fish.

While it seems like the war over “Merry Christmas” ended awhile ago due to general indifference, rest assured, the battle rages on for some Christians who are apparently offended by the recognition of any holiday they don’t 100% endorse. The allegedly “acclaimed family entertainers” Go Fish released “Christmas With A Capital C” in 2006, but thanks to a really lousy YouTube tribute video, the band finds itself in the fray again… just where it wants to be.

According to a recent poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 92 percent of Americans believe in God, and Go Fish is proudly taking a stand not only for this majority, but for the religious freedoms the term “holiday” threatens to put at risk….

“This song unapologetically reminds people that Christmas is about the birth of Christ,” says Go Fish founding member Jamie Statema. “The whole point of ‘Christmas With A Capital C’ is to show that this annual debate is about something much bigger than just whether or not to say ‘Merry Christmas.’ It’s about an ongoing effort to remove God from our American culture. We decided it was time to take a stand and as a result, ‘Christmas With A Capital C’ has become an anthem for Christians all over the United States.”

To call the song an “anthem” is a strange choice of words, but hey, why celebrate your faith in a personal manner when you can alienate nearly everyone around you with jackassery over something that couldn’t matter less? Damn that lady making your coffee who was trying to be considerate with her banal goodbye! Score one for Jesus!
