Coachella: Let The Rumor-Mongering (Complete With Baseless Britney Speculation) Continue!

Jan 12th, 2009 // 6 Comments

Thanks to its being one of the grandaddies of the mid-year American festival circuit, the Coachella lineup commands something of an outsized importance over that of its competitors; it serves as a way to figure out which smaller bands will be clogging the lower rungs of other festivals, among other things. So speculation over its lineup is always something that gets the blogs a-going in the colder months. Last year’s acts (with the exception of Prince) were announced on Jan. 21, so to get ready for the seemingly imminent announcement of 2009′s list, LAist has put together a list of the yeses, the maybes, and the “only in my dreams”es:

Confirmed Artists: the Airborne Toxic Event, the Bug, Buraka Som Sistema, Crystal Castles, Drop The Lime, Fleet Foxes, Flying Lotus, Girl Talk, the Hold Steady, the Killers, No Age, Noah and the Whale, Late of the Pier, Los Campesinos!, Peanut Butter Wolf, the Presets, Sébastien Tellier, Themselves, Tinariwen

Confirmed DJs: DJ Gina Turner, DJ Hipnotic Starr, DJ Luis Segura, DJmorales, DJ Zegon

Rumored Artists: Animal Collective, Basement Jaxx, the Black Keys, Black Lips, Blur, Britney Spears, the Comedians of Comedy, Four Tet, the Gaslight Anthem, Glasvegas, Gui Boratto, Gus Black, Heartless Bastards, Hot Little Pony, José González, Keane, KONGCRETE, Mexican Institute of Sound, Monotonix, Morrissey, Mr. Lif, N.A.S.A., Neil Young, OutKast, Plump DJs, the Pretenders, the Prodigy, the Replacements, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roni Size Reprazent, the Smiths, the Thermals, Turbonegro, We Are Scientists, White Lies, the White Stripes

Not many surprises, but there is one name that stands out to me: Britney Spears. Brit Brit, as it happens, is playing Los Angeles and its environs that weekend. It’s not that far of a drive, so could an afternoon set in the dance tent be in the offing? Or maybe even just some naptime while Fleet Foxes plays? Girlfriend could use a break, after all.

I could see them bending the contractual rules a bit in re: not appearing anywhere else (officially) in the area if playing Coachella. A rule that seems more often to garner exceptions than anything else, admittedly.

@Ned Raggett: If Britney’s show is sold out (as I’m sure it is) in L.A. I think they’d bend the rule.

Also, are The Killers one of the headliners or just playing the supporting spot? I hope supporting, just so Brandon Flowers can be pissed.

I’m enjoying my Ultra 09 lineup more and more. Alas my Coachella ’05 trip was one experience I will never forget.

  4. T'Challa

People: let’s give up the ghost on the Smiths reunion. Robert Plant will rejoin Led Zep before that happens. In short, it won’t. Don’t forget: Morrissey swore he’d eat his own testicles before performing with the Smiths again (and yes, he acknowledged that he’s a staunch vegetarian to further hammer his point home).

Some us are are most excited by the VERY strong rumors that a reunited Specials will play this year’s Coachella. Granted Jerry Dammers won’t be a part of it, but hey, those of us too young to experience their genius the first time around would REALLY appreciate it…

PS: if Blur plays, they should really toss Oasis on the bill as well. Hell, schedule them at the same time and really take it back to ’95!

The inclusion of Los Campesinos! pleases me, but since i’m seeing them in February in Boston, i’m not going out to California to see them again. Add Blur and the Thermals, then i’m slightly more interested

The Smiths? Please. I love them and all, but that’s the longest of all longshots, isn’t it? I mean, that Britney Spears rumor is probably more likely than the Smihts (I mean, Britney? At a mostly Alternative skewed event? Really?)

Ooh White Lies, maybe a full US tour to go along with this if it’s for real? And the White Stripes? Anyone have any update on Meg’s “anxiety?”
