Royksopp Give Us The Heads-Up On Ads’ Malevolent Tendencies

The video for “Happy Up Here,” the new single by the Norwegian electro duo Royksopp, is another piece of cultural product that’s designed to appeal to both the Adbusters crowd and those people who would wear a prewashed T-shirt with a fading decal of Q*Bert every day if they could. The band reimagines Space Invaders as some sort of revenge of billboards, where the lights from advertisers join together in a way that makes them even more malevolent than usual. I’m just surprised that no one has thought to program a tie-in video game yet, although maybe the band is waiting on that whole “full-circle” thing to happen in conjunction with a forthcoming Donkey Kong-themed clip.
