Counting Down Prince’s Greatest Protégés

Perhaps inspired by the Bria Valente disc from Prince’s new triple-disc set for Target, the blog Adventures Of An Audio Diva counted down its list of The Purple One’s top 10 protégés of all time recently. Besides being surprised that Taja Sevelle (above) made it all the way to No. 4. I wondered who more Prince-savvy Idolator readers might put on their own list. (I think we can all agree that Tony M should stay on the outside looking in.)

The Audio Diva list:

1. Sheila E.

“A Love Bizarre”:

2. Morris Day & The Time

“Jerk Out” (from the Arsenio Hall show):

3. Wendy & Lisa

“Waterfall”:

4. Taja Sevelle 5. Jesse Johnson 6. Sue Ann Carwell

“Rock Steady”:

7. Jill Jones

“Mia Bocca”:

8. The Family 9. Vanity 6/Apollonia 6

“He’s So Dull”:

10. Ta Mara and The Seen

Honorable Mentions:

Andre Cymone Sheena Easton

The list makes as much as sense as an arbitrary ranking of intangible opinions can; I have a hard time with Vanity 6 all the way at No. 9, and I’m not sure if The Time count as protégés. Although saying that, I then wonder—no mention of Martika, Ingrid Chavez, Tamar or Tony LeMans? It seems like there are so many to choose from, and that’s before you even consider Valente and her baby-making music.
