Kanye West Has Something To Say About Those “Gay Fish” Accusations

Apr 9th, 2009 // 23 Comments

Kanye West‘s inevitable ALL CAPS response to last night’s South Park defenestration just arrived, and he’s angry…with himself. Continuing in the pattern of self-reflection that is the Kanye West of the past year, he suggests that South Park‘s skewering is the natural end result of past egotistical behavior: “AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH,” he wrote, “THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME.” He also promises that he’s getting better!

I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!

Aw. I’m sorry, but I can’t help but love the guy (save his recent idiotic statements on Chris Brown). I don’t think we’ve had many celebrities that have so publicly wrestled with their own personas. He consistently challenges himself and our expectations of him, and, because of this, I even find his failures fascinating. He could have taken the standard “@#$% all y’all” approach but didn’t. Some might see the inward focus of his response as another cynical chance to bring attention to himself; perhaps it’s true, and he can be reflective and ego-driven at the same time.

Full statement here:

SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT’S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!” IT’S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU’RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE’S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I’M SURE THERE’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS… THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW IT’S ME!

    mr. west,

i’d be more inclined to believe you if you weren’t still using ALL CAPS.

if you’re serious, then all is forgiven.

  7. Christopher R. Weingarten

He should embrace it like Lil Jon did when Chappelle skewered him… and do a cover of “Gay Fish” at his next show.

  8. sicksteanein

    Good luck, Kanye!

  9. Ned Raggett

@silkyjumbo: i’d be more inclined to believe you if you weren’t still using ALL CAPS.

I dunno, I’d've been surprised if he didn’t.

  10. Lucas Jensen

@Ned Raggett: Then we would have known it was one of his handlers.

    @Christopher R. Weingarten: Agreed!

  11. How do I say this ... THROWDINI!

@Ned Raggett: Yep, ALL CAPS AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS, that’s how you know its him.

But seriously, good on you Kanye. I suggest a “Gay Fish” mixtape.

DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT.

Good luck, Kanye. Hip Hop is and always has been, about bravado. It is based around the ego, and the false sense of self. It’s why hip hop is SO disposable.

If I were giving this cat advice, here’s what I’d tell him.

    1) turn the Caps Lock off. Only douchebags use all caps.

    2) take a break from being an MC (always talking and bragging about yourself – again, the true nature of hip hop), and just produce. The phone should be ringing off the hook for your production skills, right?

    3) start doing things for other people – do some charity work. Visit a burn ward, man. That’ll flip your whole script around.

    4) stop reading tabloids, websites and entertainment gossip. It’s only feeding the beast you’re attempting to slay, and finally,

    5) sit down, shut up and talk to whatever God is to you. Humbleness will come.

Can I be Kanye’s life coach;)?

  15. Al Shipley

I think we should do quarterly progress reports on Kanye’s “MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE” campaign and see if he really can improve his public image at all in the future.

  16. Chris N.

I’ll bet he does like fish sticks.

  17. Lucas Jensen

@Al Shipley: You should go on the Kanye Beat, like the NME and Melody Maker writers who followed around the various Stone Roses members during the 90s.

  18. Christopher R. Weingarten

i think if kanye keeps it pos long enough and keeps making good records, we can all be laughing at gay-fish-era kanye in three years.

  19. Chris Molanphy

@djmedi4: Good luck, Kanye. Hip Hop is and always has been, about bravado. It is based around the ego, and the false sense of self.

I actually totally agree with this, and I’ve been defending Kanye with similar reasoning for years now. I actually got into a pissing match with some guy on a blog once who accused West of being an unforgivable egoist, and I’m like, Dude, this is a rapper we’re talking about…you understand that, right?!

There’s a big part of me that doesn’t want Kanye to learn a thing from this.

Because, let’s face it, self-aggrandizement has fueled his art for years now, and it’s even given him the last laugh over his naysayers. Even me — I was on record ’round these parts last fall thinking “Love Lockdown” and 808s would be his flies-too-close-to-the-sun, hubris moment, and I was wrong, wrong, wrong. The guy’s made four albums, and not one of them’s less than three stars even if you’re being uncharitable. The guy raps *and* sings with one hand tied behind his back, because he’s both a weak singer and a middling-at-best rapper, and somehow — though self-belief? — the end product is brilliant.

Seriously, Kanye, laugh along with Matt and Trey, and then don’t change a thing. We’ve all been wrong about you before.

  20. Chris Molanphy

P.S. – I half-believe even Matt and Trey think Kanye’s kind of cool.

Think about how they’ve treated everyone from Madonna to Bono on the show — if they really despised Kanye, they’d have eviscerated him.

I read the conclusion of that episode as something along the lines of Kanye’s a total douche, but we’ll admit he’s an interesting douche.

I feel your pain, brother. I really do.

Fwiw, Kanye has taken a step in making those of us who admired his talent but were tired of his egotistical ravings take another look at him. I mean, hip-hop braggadocio is a cool thing–we don’t want our rappers to get all sensitive on us, now do we?–but this is a guy who makes Jay-Z seem humble by comparison.

  22. moomintroll

Aww bless. Sometimes I just want to give Kanye a cuddle, he seems so torn about himself.
I’m proud of him for taking this on the chin. Now he needs to get a new keyboard with a functioning caps lock and the transformation is complete.
